South Dakota Tribal ID Act Educational Campaign

Client:South Dakota Indian Business Alliance

In 2011, the South Dakota Indian Business Alliance celebrated a political victory with the passage of the Tribal ID Act by the South Dakota legislature, which enabled identification cards issued by the state’s nine federally recognized tribes to be used for banking purposes, check cashing, and tobacco purchases. While the potential of this act could potentially create more access to financial services for Native Americans throughout the state, the Alliance discovered that many institutions were not complying with the new legislation. As a result, the South Dakota Indian Business Alliance contracted with Cuny Communications to develop an educational campaign to raise awareness among banking institutions and retailers regarding the passage of the Tribal ID Act.
